Bell Ringers

The current band of bell ringers formed in 2018. The Tuesday night practices, which so many of us loved, had fallen silent, so a few of us got together and under the expert tuition of Bob, Maureen and Dominic Sinclair we set ourselves the target of being able to ring for the Armistice anniversary and we succeeded! They gave us so much of their time and we are all enormously grateful.

Since then we have recruited further new members and currently we have 6-11 regular ringers, (Dominic, James, Claire, Andy, Simon, Chris, Damon and Alan from the village, and regular local visitors include Gary, Justin and Sean who live nearby).

Over the last six years despite the interruption of Covid and the retirement and relocation of the Sinclair’s, we have continued to grow and improve; and we have managed to ring solo for various weddings and funerals over the course of the last few years, and other occasions of state such as the Queens funeral and the King’s coronation. Whilst unfortunately we usually struggle to get the numbers together for the occasional Sunday services at the church, Christmas and Easter remain a firm favourite when we can gather the numbers and we all have a celebratory 'tipple in the tower' of sherry or port. After ringing of course!

We appreciate the support and patience from the villagers and the many kind words we often receive. We are far from polished but we remain committed to keeping the bells ringing. After all, they have been there for centuries before we arrived here and, God willing, will be here for many more.

We now ring on Thursday evenings from 8pm until 9pm. Our challenge though is one of time, we all work, many of us have young families, so committing every week is our greatest challenge. We are in need of additional ringers, from newbies who would like to learn to those who have any level of experience. Additional numbers each week would guarantee we have enough to make a sound on a regular basis.

We are also keen to engage the next generation of ringers, our average age is mid 40’s so we need to think about future succession.

Above all we try and have a laugh and some fun. When we do manage to get together, you will find us in the Romer Arm’s every Thursday evening after practice where of course we discuss and reflect on our development. At length!!
