On The Green is the Romer Arms, a public house on the site of the previous Bakers Arms.
In the 1930s when tragedy struck and the Bakers Arms was consumed by fire Romer Williams, who then lived at Newnham Hall acquired the site and had the new pub built renamimg it The Romer Arms and it is his family coat of arms that is depicted on the sign.
Translated, the Latin inscription on the coat of arms is, 'To do and to suffer is the better way for the Roman'. When the pub opened Romer placed free barrels of beer on The Green to celebrate.
The pub is also known as "Maria's Kitchen" a Portuguese pub and restaurant, with fresh homecooked authentic food prepared by Maria and her trusty team. This is really a huge asset to the village.
Newnham is a small village located in the county of Northamptonshire, just south of Daventry, situated on the banks of the River Nene and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The village name is thought to derive from Anglo Saxon meaning, however it could also mean 'At the new homestead/village' or 'at the new hemmed-in land'.
